今回の「紫を着よう」という運動は、10月20日を「Gay Spirit Day」とし、これらの被害者を追悼し、同じような目にあっている若者に、支援者がいることを示し、彼らのセクシャリティを支えてくれるコミュニティがあることを示そうというもの。
これは特に、どこかの団体が中心となって呼びかけているムーブメントではなく、カナダの10代の女の子Brittany McMillanが、Tumblrを通じて呼びかけたものが、facebookや各種ニュースサイトを通じて草の根的に広まっている。
